STONEMASONRY RESTORATION CLEANING CONSULTANCY Memorials & Statues NEW BUILD RAILWAYS SURVEYS TERRACOTTAStone Central were contracted to repair and replace the damaged terracotta on the Town Hall in Westhaughton. The building was constructed in 1903 and stands on Market Street in the centre of the town.
A survey revealed that the building was in need of extensive repair and restoration and a grant was allocated to perform the works needed both internally and externally.
The building was built using Ruabon terracotta bricks which are made from clay mined in North Wales and were expected to withstand the effects of smoke and dirt of an industrial town. Ruabon Quarry Tiles have been manufactured from natural Welsh clay reserves at Ruabon since 1867. The bricks and tiles mined from the clay in Ruabon quarries are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, and offer a large scope for constructing elements such as bricks, tiles, pipes, chimney pots, finials and cornices.
Stone Central were contracted to carry out the works as the main contractor needed a company that had expertise and had experience of both restoration and construction in terracotta. We reformed and restored any terracotta that was broken or missing. This included work on the capitals, cornice work and dentals. Once the works were completed the building was restored to its former grandeur and the clients were delighted with the finished results.
