Ribble Head Viaduct

Stone Central were contacted by Network Rail to carry out restoration and repair work on the Ribblehead viaduct which carries the Settle-Carlisle railway across Batty Moss in the Ribble Valley. The viaduct, which opened in 1876,  is constructed with locally quarried limestone. The near-semi-circular arches are red brick, constructed in five separate rings, with stone voussoirs.

Project Detail

Sleeper walls rise from the arches to support the stone slabs of the viaduct’s deck and hollow spandrels support plain solid parapet walls. In order to complete the work required, scaffolding would neither be practical or cost effective for the client, and so we used our expert in-house rope access team to carry out the work. We were able to fully survey the structure and provide a report of what was needed. We were then also able to use rope access to perform some pointing and jointing work as well as vegetation removal.
