India Buildings – Liverpool

Restoration of Grade II* India Buildings in the heart of Liverpool’s World Heritage area.

India Buildings occupies a whole block and has nine storeys, a mezzanine, a basement and a sub-basement. The building is constructed on a steel frame and is clad in Portland Stone.  For this project, the client thought that the steelwork may be causing damage to stonework, but was unsure to what extent. We were employed to investigate and find cause of the damage. After extensive surveys we discovered that it wasn’t the steel work as originally thought; the damage was being caused by localised non-iron works.

Project Detail

In identifying this issue, we were able to save the client time and money that may have been spent performing unnecessary works. After reporting findings, we worked in conjunction with both engineers and conservation officers to determine scope of remedial works. We sourced Portland Stone to match the original and developed mortar mixes to ensure a match to the mortar elsewhere on the building. This was key to maintain the façade in as original state as possible and preserve its cultural and architectural significance to the city. We also sourced glazed brickworks for the interior of the building to match the original and be used in the lightwells

We then detailed the stonework and produced new units to repair the damaged areas across all elevations of the building. We completed a mason’s clean once the repairs were completed to restore the appearance of the Portland Stone. The building has completed its restoration and is now fit to be used as a desirable commercial space for many years to come.
